The history of Johanneson's Inc. goes back a number of years, starting with the creation of the Company in the early 1940's by Thelma & John Johanneson in a small neighborhood supermarket in Fargo, North Dakota.
Other stores were purchased in various rural communities in Northern Minnesota.
In 1962, John Johanneson took a gigantic leap and built a new, modern supermarket across from Bemidji State University. That store later became known as Super John's Supermarket and was very successful.
In the early 1970's, John Johanneson retired from the day-to-day operations of the business, and Keith Johanneson became President of the Company.
In 1990, the Albertson store was purchased and became Marketplace Foods. This store was expanded in 1999.
The Moose Lake store was purchased in 2000. In 2005, 3 Miracle Mart stores were purchased in Minot and would soon become Marketplace Foods stores. In 2008, stores were purchased in Grand Rapids Minnesota and Grantsburg Wisconsin.
In 2013, a new Marketplace Food & Drug store is built on Minot's North Hill. New stores were aquired in Wisconsin and renamed KJ's Fresh Market.
In 2020, Pet Supplies Plus opens in Minot. Keith Johanneson transfers all company stock into an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). "JND Holdings has always been family-focused, and I am proud to say that transferring the ownership to employees feels like transferring ownership to members of my own family. I would trust no one more than those who have helped build JND Holdings to what it is today to continue the Johanneson legacy. To me, JND Holdings will still feel like it is family-owned." says Keith Johanneson.
We are proud to be a 100% employee owned company and to carry on the legacy of the Johanneson family.
